Weekend Happenings
This is the first in a series of posts about all the ways to amuse yourself in the hybernation-inducing wintery depths of New York City. Don’t huddle at home, under a ratty blanket watching old episodes of Lost by yourself. That’s just depressing man. Instead, check out all of the amazing things happenings under our collective noses. Hey, you might even get a bit more culture under...

Día de los Muertos this Weekend @ St. Mark's...
Want to do something a little different from the typical Halloween festivities?
“Mano a Mano — a nonprofit group dedicated to Mexican culture — presents four days of spooky celebrations surrounding the Día de los Muertos. Bookended by the creation and dismantling of an elaborately decorated altar, the long weekend features a dance procession on Thursday night, along with workshops and...

Chris Martin Has LOTS of Bouncy Energy On Stage. He asked people what they were missing Monday evening back home, wondering out loud whether it was “Frasier” or the “Fraggles.” Yes, those Fraggles.

Biker Hit Today Corner of Columbia and Amity Pl
Happened not 5 minutes before I biked passed the spot this morning on my way to work. He was being put onto a gurney by the paramedics. A fellow bike rider who witnessed the scene said that a black car service hit him and drove off. :(
Hope you are feeling ok, mr. biker!
Jollyship and the Whizbang @Spiegelworld
Enticed by a shoutout in ToxicPop last week I dragged my friend to check out Jollyship and the Whizbang at Speigelworld at South Street Seaport (if you’ve never been go see a cabaret show there. The view is killer).
From the ToxicPop description: “A concert with songs you’ve never heard, with outfits you’ve never seen and drinks you’ve never drunked (drinkees sold...
Suckered into another online "personality test"
The result of 10 minutes of wasted productivity.
I am “The Wild Rose,” according to okcupid.com. Yup, and there you have it.
Random Brutal Love Dreamer (RBLD)
Colorful, but unpicked. You are The Wild Rose.
Prone to bouts of cynicism, sarcasm, and thorns, you excite a certain kind of man. Hoping to gather you up, he flirts and winks and asks you out, ultimately professing his...
Karaoke on You Tube
I blew my throat strings and my mind on You Tube last night. There is a Karaoke channel?!
But I hate karaoke! Friends over for dinner + copious glasses of wine + karaoke at home = the best night ever. Big props to xandersdad1’s, whoever you are. http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=xandersdad1
Lunch for $4.50 in DUMBO
Have a grandma from Puerto Rico who cooks you fresh stewed chick, rice, beans? No, you say?
well then, make a pit stop at Bridge Coffee Shop. Its technically in “Vinegar Hill,” but for all intensive purposes really in DUMBO. You can’t beat their lunch specials. Plus, real utensils! People who are actually nice and offer you water!
Bear Hands @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
I went to see Les Savvy Five at the Music Hall of Williamsburg Sunday night. They ruled. The lead singer was down to a pair of red swimming trunks within 30 minutes, and towards the end of the set was jumping from the balconies. But…the real highlight of the evening was their opening band, Bear Hands. My vote for best new Brooklyn Band, Fall 2008.

Pizza by Surprise
I’ve lived in the Cobble Hill area for over two years, and as of last Wednesday, am embarrassed to say I’d never paid a visit to Lucali’s. Growing up in Bensonhurst, and later Staten Island, I only realized later in life how spoiled I’ve been, always residing within a 5 minute walk from excellent bagels, Italian ices, and pizza. Everything else, by comparison, has been a...
